Mobal and Sakura Mobile both sell Japan connectivity in English, but the better choice depends on what you need. Sakura Mobile is the easier starting point for most short tourist trips, while Mobal is especially useful when a real Japanese phone number is the priority.

The better choice depends less on the logo and more on three questions: How long will you stay? Do you need ordinary Japanese calls or SMS? Do you want instant digital setup, physical pickup, or a shared router?

Source and price check: Mobal and Sakura Mobile product and support pages were rechecked on September 10, 2026. This is a source-based comparison, not a hands-on speed test. Promotions, allowances, taxes, pickup rules, and availability can change, so recheck the final checkout total and current terms before paying.

The short answer

Choose Sakura Mobile first for a typical short sightseeing trip when you want a data-only travel eSIM, a physical travel SIM, or one Pocket WiFi device for a family. Its public travel range supports trips of up to 90 days, and its eSIM currently starts from ¥1,375 including tax.

Choose Mobal first when a real Japanese 070, 080, or 090 phone number is the priority. Its current monthly range includes a Voice-Only option and Voice+Data SIM/eSIM plans. However, voice eSIM delivery is not the same as an instant tourist eSIM: identity and access-code delivery steps matter.

Pick the product by need, not by brand

What you actually need Start with Why
Maps, messaging, and app-based calls for a trip under 90 days Sakura Mobile travel eSIM or a Mobal tourist eSIM Data-only products avoid the identity and delivery steps attached to a Japanese voice number
One connection shared by a family that stays together Sakura Mobile or Mobal Pocket WiFi One router can connect several devices, but the group must manage charging and stay near it
A real 070, 080, or 090 number with calls and SMS Mobal Voice-Only or Voice+Data Mobal separates number-only service from data plans
A Japanese number plus at least 5 GB of monthly data and English support Compare both monthly voice ranges Upfront fees, call charges, billing dates, and length of stay can reverse the headline-price comparison

Do not buy a voice product only because a booking form asks for a phone number. First confirm whether the service requires a Japanese SMS-capable number, an ordinary callable number, or simply a contact number. A Japanese number does not override a separate residence, address, or identity requirement.

Is Mobal good for Japan?

Mobal can be a good choice for Japan when you need a real Japanese phone number, English-language setup help, or a SIM arranged before a longer stay. Its Voice-Only option is especially relevant when receiving ordinary Japanese calls or SMS matters more than having mobile data.

It is less compelling when your only requirement is inexpensive data for a short holiday. In that case, compare Mobal’s tourist eSIM with Sakura Mobile’s data-only eSIM and other travel products for your exact dates. A simple digital plan may avoid the identity, delivery, billing, and cancellation steps attached to voice service.

The practical answer is product-specific: Mobal is good for number-first and longer-stay use cases, but it is not automatically the best-value tourist data option. Check the current total price, high-speed allowance, compatible devices, and delivery method before choosing.

Read our focused Mobal review covering pros, cons, coverage, and 5G for a deeper look at the provider itself.

Who this comparison is not for

This article will not pick a universal “fastest network.” Both providers use major Japanese mobile networks, and real performance depends on the exact product, location, building, congestion, and compatible phone. Check the network named on the live offer and its official coverage map for destinations where connectivity is critical.

For Sakura’s named Travel and Monthly SIM/eSIM products, use our Sakura Mobile coverage map guide to select Docomo or au before checking your itinerary.

It is also not a promise that buying a Japanese number will satisfy every bank, rental, ticketing, or identity requirement. A service may separately require residency, a Japanese address, or specific identification.

Finally, this is not a hands-on speed test. The comparison is based on current public product pages, support documentation, and booking conditions rather than invented personal experience.

What each provider is actually selling

Mobal

Mobal separates short-term data products from monthly voice products. Its current tourist eSIM range includes data-only plans, while its longer-stay range includes physical SIM and eSIM products with a real Japanese phone number.

The phone-number range includes:

  • Voice-Only for calls and SMS;
  • voice + data plans with monthly high-speed allowances;
  • physical SIM and eSIM formats;
  • free pickup in Japan or delivery options on eligible products;
  • English-language support and an online account for billing and cancellation.

Mobal’s public Japan SIM page currently lists Voice-Only at ¥1,430 per month after the SIM purchase, and Voice+Data from ¥1,650 per month after the product purchase. Calls, outgoing SMS, optional services, and excess-use rules require a separate check.

Sakura Mobile

Sakura Mobile divides its products into short-term travel and monthly resident ranges. The public travel page lists:

  • travel eSIM from ¥1,375 including tax;
  • physical travel SIM from ¥3,850 including tax;
  • travel Pocket WiFi from ¥329 per day including tax;
  • English support;
  • airport, hotel, post-office, and residential pickup or delivery options for eligible physical products.

Its monthly range includes voice + data, data-only, Pocket WiFi, and home internet. The monthly voice page currently starts at ¥3,278 per month including tax for 5 GB, plus a ¥5,500 activation fee. Calls and SMS are not included in that monthly price.

Price comparison: use the total, not the headline

The providers structure their prices differently, so the first large number on each page is not a fair comparison.

Example public offer Published price rechecked Sep. 1, 2026 Cost that is easy to miss
Mobal tourist eSIM, 3 GB / 8 days ¥3,300 one time Speed reduces after the high-speed allowance
Mobal tourist eSIM, 10 GB / 8 days ¥3,850 one time Data-only; no Japanese number
Mobal Voice-Only ¥1,430/month after product purchase SIM/eSIM purchase, outgoing calls and SMS, and optional services
Mobal voice + data From ¥1,650/month after product purchase SIM/eSIM purchase, calls, SMS, and calendar-month billing
Sakura Mobile travel eSIM From ¥1,375 tax included The exact duration, data policy, and tethering limit depend on the selected plan
Sakura Mobile travel physical SIM From ¥3,850 tax included Device compatibility and pickup/delivery timing
Sakura Mobile travel Pocket WiFi From ¥329/day tax included Rental duration, return responsibility, and the exact data policy
Sakura Mobile monthly voice + data From ¥3,278/month tax included ¥5,500 activation fee plus calls/SMS

For a short tourist eSIM, compare the total price for your exact dates and the amount of high-speed or tethering data—not the word “unlimited” by itself.

For a monthly voice plan, calculate at least:

  1. SIM or eSIM purchase or activation fee;
  2. first partial month, if applicable;
  3. one full monthly fee;
  4. expected calls and SMS;
  5. delivery or pickup cost;
  6. the date by which you must cancel.

Monthly voice plans: trip dates are not billing dates

A short stay can cross two billing months. Before choosing a Japanese phone-number plan, check the activation date, first-month data allowance, final-month charge, and cancellation deadline—not just the advertised monthly price.

The rules below concern ongoing monthly voice plans, not prepaid tourist data eSIMs. Billing conditions checked on October 10, 2026:

Purchase question Mobal ongoing voice plan Sakura Mobile monthly SIM/eSIM
What happens if I start partway through a month? The first plan fee is prorated for service from the selected activation date to month-end. Both the first-month fee and data allowance are prorated. Do not assume the full advertised monthly allowance is available immediately.
Is the final month prorated? No. Ending service mid-month still incurs the full final-month plan fee. No. The final month carries the full monthly fee.
Does leaving Japan automatically cancel the plan? No: ongoing charges continue until you manually terminate. The voice-service cancellation process lets you select the last full day of service. No: request termination through the account. Standard monthly termination takes effect at month-end. Submit by the 25th for that month; a request from the 26th takes effect at the end of the following month.

Worked example: 30 days across two billing months

Calculation checked October 17, 2026: activate on November 16, 2026, and leave Japan on December 15, 2026 (30 days inclusive). Compare the ongoing 5 GB monthly Voice+Data eSIM from each provider, assuming card payment, in-person collection, no discount, no optional services, and no outgoing calls or SMS. These are calculations using the checked prices and billing rules, not guaranteed November–December quotes.

Product and basic-plan charges, tax included Mobal monthly Voice+Data eSIM, 5 GB Sakura Mobile monthly Voice+Data eSIM, 5 GB
Upfront product / activation fee ¥4,950 ¥5,500
Normal calendar-month plan fee ¥3,190 ¥3,278
November 16–30: 15/30 of the monthly fee ¥1,595 ¥1,639
December: full monthly fee ¥3,190 ¥3,278
Product + basic-plan subtotal ¥9,735 ¥10,417

The subtotal is upfront fee + partial November + full December; the normal monthly fee row is a reference, not another charge. See the official Mobal eSIM prices and Sakura monthly voice prices. Mobal’s ¥1,650 monthly plan includes 1 GB, so it is not the equivalent of Sakura’s 5 GB plan.

This is not an all-in price or an identical data allowance. Sakura’s collection cost has not been confirmed and is excluded; check any logistics charges before paying. Sakura prorates first-month data as well as fees, giving approximately 2.5 GB in November in this calculation. Mobal’s first-month data allowance has not been confirmed, so do not assume 5 GB or 2.5 GB. Usage, optional extras, and any other applicable charges are outside these subtotals. This example does not establish the cheapest product across either provider’s range; Sakura’s separate Travel Voice+Data price has not been verified here.

Arrange cancellation; departure does not cancel either monthly plan. With Mobal, submit the request in advance and select December 15 as the last full day of service; the full December fee still applies. With Sakura, submit by December 25 for termination on December 31; a request on or after December 26 moves termination to the end of January and adds another billing month. The billing and cancellation sources below explain these rules.

Allow for collection before activation. Mobal voice eSIM requires a physical access code. Sakura’s monthly SIM/eSIM FAQ says passport-only applicants must collect in person even for an eSIM. This example assumes those steps are completed in time for the selected activation date.

If activation and cancellation fall in the same calendar month, do not assume the first-month and final-month rules resolve to a prorated bill: the FAQs reviewed here do not settle that overlap. Also check Mobal’s first-month data allowance for the exact product; the billing FAQ does not establish it.

If you only need maps, messaging, and app-based calls, compare fixed-duration tourist data plans first. If you need a real Japanese number, check all five items before ordering:

  1. The exact voice product, SIM/eSIM format, upfront fee, and monthly allowance.
  2. The first and final billing months—not only arrival and departure dates.
  3. First-month usable data, identity checks, and delivery or pickup requirements.
  4. The applicable cancellation process and any return or logistics costs.
  5. Chargeable calls, texts, and optional services, including charges that may arrive later.

Which is better for a short Japan trip?

Sakura Mobile is the easier starting comparison for most short-term visitors because it places eSIM, physical SIM, and Pocket WiFi in one travel range.

Its Travel Data-Only eSIM is delivered digitally. That is a good fit for an unlocked, compatible phone when maps, messaging, translation, email, and app-based calls are enough. The public page lets travelers select dates across a 1–90-day range.

Its physical SIM is useful when the phone lacks eSIM support but remains unlocked and compatible. Pocket WiFi deserves consideration for a family that stays together and wants to connect several phones, tablets, or laptops through one router.

Mobal can still fit a short trip. Its tourist eSIM range includes simple fixed-duration data plans, including current 8-day examples. That may be attractive when the allowance and duration closely match the trip. Compare the live options rather than assuming that one provider is cheaper for every date.

Read our eSIM vs Pocket WiFi comparison if your real decision is between one connection per phone and one shared family router.

Which is better when you need a Japanese phone number?

Mobal is the stronger first comparison when the phone number itself is the main requirement. Its Voice-Only plan separates number access from data plans, while its Voice+Data range starts at a lower published monthly fee than Sakura Mobile’s smallest monthly voice + data plan.

Sakura also advertises a separate Travel Voice+Data eSIM for visits of up to 90 days. It requires in-person identity verification and counter pickup; it is not the emailed Data-Only eSIM or the monthly voice contract. Check the exact product’s price, collection options and conditions rather than applying the monthly billing table above.

Targeted check: Sakura’s separate Travel Voice+Data offering and pickup requirement were checked on October 17, 2026. This targeted check does not revalidate plan prices or the rest of this comparison. Earlier price checks retain their stated dates.

What Mobal voice eSIM setup actually involves

Mobal’s current voice eSIM process has two separate codes and should not be treated like an instant data-only eSIM:

  1. Order the voice eSIM and choose delivery or a collection point.
  2. For delivery, upload the accepted ID after ordering; Mobal says the access code is shipped to the address shown on the approved ID. For collection, show the required passport and order confirmation.
  3. Receive or collect the physical eight-character eSIM Access Code.
  4. Enter that access code in Mobal MyAccount to request activation.
  5. After activation, use the separate installation email or device prompt to install the eSIM and configure the line.

The ID rules apply to voice-capable products, not Mobal’s data-only products. This distinction is the main reason a product can be an eSIM without being delivered instantly by email. Check Mobal’s current voice-product ID requirements and Voice Lite activation guide before planning an arrival-day activation.

That does not automatically make Mobal cheaper. Its SIM or eSIM has an upfront purchase price, and calls, outgoing messages, optional services, and billing dates affect the total. Voice-Only does not include ordinary mobile data.

Sakura Mobile becomes more competitive when you want a conventional bundle with a Japanese number and at least 5 GB of monthly data, particularly if its English support and pickup process reduce setup risk for you. Its activation fee makes short use relatively expensive, but that fee is spread across a longer stay.

Both providers require identity-related steps for voice service. Mobal states that its voice eSIM access code is not sent instantly by email; it is delivered or collected through its prescribed identity process. Sakura Mobile says voice applicants can use a passport for airport or office pickup, while residents applying for delivery may need residence documentation with a registered address.

Use our Japanese phone-number guide before paying. It explains why “eSIM” does not mean “instant delivery” or “voice included.”

Setup and delivery differences

If you want instant digital setup

Compare data-only tourist eSIMs. Sakura Mobile says its Travel Data-Only eSIM can be purchased, installed, and activated digitally. Mobal also emails activation instructions for its data-only tourist eSIMs.

Do not apply that expectation to voice products. A real Japanese phone number introduces identity checks and may require physical delivery or pickup even when the final service uses eSIM technology.

If you want airport pickup

Sakura Mobile’s current support page lists partner pickup counters at Narita Terminal 1 and 2, Haneda Terminal 3, Kansai Terminal 1, and Fukuoka International Terminal. Some locations are preorder-only, and deadlines apply.

Mobal advertises free Japan pickup on eligible SIM and eSIM products. Check the exact pickup point, identification requirement, opening hours, and how early you must order before building it into an arrival-day itinerary.

If you want delivery before travel

Mobal offers worldwide delivery on eligible physical products and access-code products. Sakura Mobile’s short-term physical travel products are generally collected or delivered within Japan, while its travel eSIM avoids physical delivery.

Whichever provider you choose, save the confirmation email, setup instructions, support contact, and a screenshot of the selected plan offline.

Device compatibility

Neither provider can fix a carrier-locked phone. Before ordering a SIM or eSIM:

  • confirm that the phone is unlocked;
  • check the exact model and sales region;
  • confirm eSIM support when choosing eSIM;
  • check the required LTE bands and VoLTE support for voice;
  • verify that the selected product, not just the provider, supports tethering;
  • keep another internet connection available during installation.

For Mobal’s current voice eSIM, the public requirements include eSIM support, an unlocked device, 4G/LTE Band 1, and VoLTE for calls. Sakura Mobile provides a model-checking tool on its public product pages.

Use our Japan eSIM checklist before checkout.

If you choose Mobal, continue with our Mobal eSIM setup and activation guide so you follow the correct Data-Only, Voice+Data, or Voice Lite process.

Recommendation by traveler type

Solo tourist with an unlocked eSIM phone

Start with Sakura Mobile’s travel eSIM and compare it with Mobal’s tourist eSIM for your exact duration and data use. Sakura’s date flexibility is useful; Mobal’s fixed options may be simpler when one matches the trip.

Family carrying several devices

Start with Sakura Mobile Pocket WiFi, then compare its total rental and return logistics with buying an eSIM for each phone. A shared router works best when the group stays together.

Traveler who needs a Japanese number for occasional calls or SMS

Start with Mobal Voice-Only. Confirm that having no included mobile data fits your actual use and add every expected call, SMS, and product charge to the calculation.

Student, worker, or resident who needs voice and regular data

Compare Mobal voice + data with Sakura Mobile monthly voice + data. Mobal has the lower published monthly entry point, while Sakura Mobile’s smallest voice bundle includes more high-speed data. The length of stay determines how important each upfront charge becomes.

Traveler who does not need a local number

Do not pay for voice complexity. Choose a data-only travel product and use WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime, Signal, or another data-based service for calls.

A safer buying sequence

  1. Decide whether a real Japanese phone number is essential.
  2. Confirm the exact phone model is unlocked and compatible.
  3. Choose data-only, voice + data, or shared Pocket WiFi.
  4. Enter the exact trip dates and compare the total payable amount.
  5. Read high-speed data, fair-use, tethering, call, and SMS rules.
  6. Confirm identity, delivery, pickup, activation, and cancellation timing.
  7. Save every instruction and support contact offline.
  8. Keep airport WiFi or another backup connection available for setup.

Mobal vs Sakura Mobile FAQ

Is Mobal or Sakura Mobile better for tourists?

Sakura Mobile is the easier starting point for a typical short sightseeing trip because its travel range includes data-only eSIM, physical SIM, and Pocket WiFi. Mobal can be the better fit when a fixed-duration tourist plan matches your dates or when you need to compare a separate voice product with a real Japanese phone number.

Which is cheaper, Mobal or Sakura Mobile?

Neither provider is always cheaper. Mobal has a lower published monthly starting price for its Voice-Only product, while Sakura Mobile has a lower published starting price for its travel eSIM in the offers checked for this guide. Compare the upfront fee, full trip duration, high-speed data, calls, SMS, delivery, and cancellation timing—not just the headline price.

Do Mobal and Sakura Mobile both offer eSIM?

Yes, but “eSIM” does not describe the complete service. A tourist data eSIM can usually be delivered digitally, while an eSIM with a Japanese phone number may require identity verification and a separate delivery or pickup process. Check the exact product rather than assuming every eSIM is instant or includes calls.

Which provider gives you a Japanese phone number?

Both providers offer eligible monthly voice products with Japanese phone numbers. Sakura also advertises a separate Travel Voice+Data eSIM with in-person ID verification and pickup. Mobal separates out a Voice-Only option, which can suit someone who needs calls and SMS but does not want included mobile data. Their Data-Only tourist eSIMs do not include a Japanese number.

Can I set up either service before arriving in Japan?

You can usually purchase and install an eligible data-only eSIM before arrival, then activate it according to the provider’s instructions. Physical products and voice services have different identity, delivery, pickup, and activation requirements. Keep the confirmation and setup instructions available offline for arrival day.

Does Mobal support 5G in Japan?

5G availability depends on the exact Mobal product, network access, device, location, and current terms. Do not assume that every Mobal plan includes 5G. See our focused Mobal coverage and 5G review and verify the live product page before ordering.

Bottom line

For a typical short trip, Sakura Mobile is the more versatile starting point because its travel range clearly covers eSIM, physical SIM, and Pocket WiFi. For a longer stay where a real Japanese number is the central requirement, Mobal’s Voice-Only and lower-entry Voice+Data options make it the stronger first comparison.

Do not choose from the brand name alone. Choose the product format, identity process, data policy, and complete cost that match the trip—and confirm the live terms before checkout.
