Mobal sells different products for different needs. Start with a Data-Only tourist eSIM if you need maps, messaging and app-based calls; compare a voice-capable product only if you need a Japanese phone number. The delivery, identity checks and billing rules are not interchangeable.
This review explains who each product type can suit and what to check before paying. It is based on official documentation, not a hands-on speed test. For two-provider costs, use our Mobal vs Sakura comparison; for shared family connections, use our eSIM vs Pocket WiFi guide.
Current-information note: Product names, public prices, and Vacation Plan support terms were checked on September 29, 2026. Promotions and plan terms can change. Confirm the final checkout total and live conditions before paying.
Editorial update: The title, summary and introduction were clarified on October 17, 2026. This did not recheck all plan prices or product terms below.
The short answer: is Mobal good?
Yes, Mobal can be good if you need a real 070, 080, or 090 Japanese number, English support, or a flexible monthly voice plan. Its current Voice+Data range includes 5G data, and Mobal says the service connects to the Docomo network.
Mobal is less convincing when you only need data for a brief vacation. A simple tourist eSIM from Mobal or another provider may be cheaper and faster to receive than a voice product. The voice eSIM access code cannot simply be emailed because identity verification is required. If you are still choosing the connection type, start with our Japan internet decision guide.
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Is Mobal legitimate? | It is an established provider selling Japan SIM, eSIM, and Pocket WiFi products with English support. |
| Does Mobal provide a Japanese number? | Voice-Only and Voice+Data products provide a real 070, 080, or 090 number. Data-only tourist products do not. |
| Does Mobal have 5G? | Current Voice+Data plans advertise 5G; selected eSIM products support it. Device, plan, location, and congestion still matter. |
| Is the voice eSIM instant? | No. Mobal sends or provides a physical access code after the required identity process. |
| Is there a contract? | Mobal advertises no minimum contract and no termination fee, but ongoing service must be cancelled correctly. |
| Best fit | Longer stays, number-first buyers, students, workers, and residents who want English support. |
How this review was prepared
This is not a personal speed test or a claim that we used Mobal in every region of Japan. It is an evidence-based review of Mobal’s current public product pages and setup documentation.
Mobile performance changes by phone model, frequency support, building, train route, congestion, and exact plan. No responsible review can promise identical speeds everywhere from a coverage claim alone.
What Mobal sells in Japan
Mobal currently separates its Japan range into several products:
- data-only tourist SIMs and eSIMs for short trips;
- Voice-Only SIM and eSIM products with a Japanese number;
- Voice+Data 5G SIM and eSIM products for longer stays;
- Pocket WiFi for users who want a separate router.
This means that “Mobal review” is not one simple verdict. A traveler comparing an eight-day data-only eSIM is buying a different service from a resident arranging a monthly Japanese number.
Mobal pros
1. A real Japanese phone number is available
Mobal’s Voice-Only and Voice+Data products include a real Japanese mobile number with a 070, 080, or 090 prefix. Incoming calls and SMS are free under the current public terms, while outgoing calls and messages are charged separately.
This can be useful for restaurant bookings, delivery contact, local employers, schools, ticket services, and accounts that send SMS codes. However, a Japanese number does not guarantee acceptance by every bank, ticketing platform, or identity service. Those companies may also require residency, a Japanese address, or specific identification.
2. English-language ordering and support
Mobal markets the service to international visitors and residents, with English product pages, setup guidance, and customer support. This can reduce the friction of comparing Japanese-only carrier contracts or visiting a local shop.
3. Docomo network access and broad stated coverage
Mobal says its current Voice+Data products connect to the Docomo network and cites coverage of more than 99% of Japan’s population. That is a useful starting point for ordinary city and regional travel.
Population coverage is not the same as guaranteed reception on every mountain road, island, basement, rural rail segment, or inside every building. Check the official network coverage map for the exact destinations where connectivity is essential.
4. 5G is available on current voice-and-data plans
Mobal’s present Voice+Data range advertises 5G data, with monthly allowances from 1 GB and larger plans available. Unused data from the current allowance can roll into the next month under the published terms.
After the high-speed allowance is used, Mobal says data remains available at a reduced speed of around 200 kbps. The allowance resets on the first day of the calendar month.
5. No minimum contract
Mobal states that its current long-stay plans have no minimum contract and no termination fee. The first calendar month’s recurring fee is prorated according to the activation date.
This flexibility helps people staying for a semester, working holiday, temporary assignment, or uncertain period. It does not remove the need to cancel an ongoing plan correctly through the online account.
6. Data-only eSIM setup can be quick
For a data-only tourist eSIM, Mobal’s support guide says immediate activation details are generally emailed after the request is processed. A future activation date can also be selected.
The plan starts when it first connects to the network in Japan under the current support instructions. Install it while connected to reliable WiFi and save the QR code or manual installation details offline.
Choose the product on the next page: the button below opens Mobal’s eSIM catalogue, not a physical-SIM order. For maps and app-based calls without a Japanese number, select Tourist Data-Only and check the duration and allowance; do not assume that plan is preselected. Select Voice+Data for a Japanese number plus data, or Voice-Only for calls and SMS without included mobile data.
Mobal cons and important limitations
1. Voice eSIM delivery is not instant
Mobal cannot email the access credentials for its Japanese-number eSIM in the same way as a data-only tourist eSIM. The provider says it must verify identity and send a physical eSIM access code or make it available at a collection point.
If you need connectivity immediately after landing, arrange the voice product early or keep airport WiFi and a separate data connection available.
2. Headline monthly prices are not the complete cost
The current public long-stay range lists Voice-Only from ¥1,430 per calendar month and Voice+Data from ¥1,650 per calendar month. A SIM or eSIM purchase price is paid separately, and outgoing calls, outgoing SMS, optional roaming, voicemail, and other usage can add cost.
Compare the total for your intended stay:
- upfront SIM or eSIM price;
- prorated first calendar month;
- each following monthly charge;
- outgoing calls and SMS;
- optional features;
- the date and method for cancellation.
3. The cheapest Mobal product may not match your use
Voice-Only is for calls and SMS rather than ordinary mobile-data use. Voice+Data costs more. A data-only tourist eSIM is simpler for maps, messaging, translation, and app-based calls, but it does not provide a Japanese phone number.
Choose the service type first. Comparing only the lowest number on the page can lead to buying the wrong product.
4. Compatibility needs more than an eSIM logo
For a Mobal eSIM, the phone must be unlocked, support native eSIM, and support the required Japanese network frequencies. Mobal currently specifies 4G/LTE Band 1, and VoLTE is required for calls.
Some Android voice configurations have additional restrictions, and some physical-SIM-free iPhones require eSIM. Check the exact model, country of purchase, operating system, and Mobal compatibility guidance before ordering.
5. 5G does not mean maximum speed everywhere
The presence of a 5G badge means the selected plan and compatible device can use 5G where available. It does not guarantee a particular download speed. Coverage, congestion, indoor reception, phone bands, and local network conditions still determine real performance.
For a short tourist plan, confirm whether the exact product is 4G or 5G. Do not assume every Mobal product has identical network access.
6. Cancellation can permanently remove the number
An ongoing plan continues until cancellation is requested. Mobal’s activation support also warns that a terminated Voice-Only number cannot be recovered or transferred through that product process.
Cancel only when you are certain the number is no longer needed, and keep enough time for any delayed usage charges to appear.
What is the Mobal Vacation Plan?
The Mobal Vacation Plan is not a short-term tourist data package. It is a ¥900-per-calendar-month suspension option for a limited group of existing customers who want to keep the same Japanese number while normal service is paused.
The critical limitation is eligibility. Mobal’s current support page says the Vacation Plan is available only to customers using an eligible older 4G Voice+Data SIM Card or Voice+Data eSIM on a long-term plan. It specifically says the following products cannot be suspended:
- the latest Voice+Data 5G SIM Card or Voice+Data 5G eSIM;
- Voice Lite or current Voice-Only SIM/eSIM products;
- prepaid Data-Only SIM/eSIM products;
- physical Voice+Data SIM cards purchased before October 12, 2021, known as Japan Unlimited V1.
For an eligible older 4G product, the change is requested in MyAccount and begins on the first day of an upcoming calendar month. A request submitted less than 24 hours before month-end may move to the following month.
If you are buying a current 5G or Voice-Only product, do not assume the Vacation Plan will be available. Mobal’s live Voice product page states that its Voice SIMs and eSIMs do not support temporary suspension. Check the exact product name in MyAccount or ask Mobal support before relying on a pause option. For an ineligible 5G product, Mobal’s support page suggests downgrading to a lower active plan instead of suspension.
Returning to Japan? Check your data-upgrade date before downgrading
For current SP30 physical SIM / ES30 voice eSIM products, Mobal’s suspension rules exclude suspension; a lower active plan may reduce ongoing costs. Check your exact product code and available plans in MyAccount. Do not assume everyone can switch to the same cheapest plan. Older SP142/ES8 products have separate Vacation Plan rules; Voice Lite cannot be suspended or downgraded.
Under Mobal’s plan-change rules, SP30/ES30 upgrades cannot start mid-month: select the first of an upcoming month and submit at least 48 hours before month-start, as Mobal recommends. Downgrades also start on a month’s first day; with less than 24 hours left, the earliest effective date may skip the immediately upcoming month.
Existing-plan example: returning to Japan on November 15? Arrange November’s required allowance to take effect on November 1, requesting it at least 48 hours beforehand. A November 15 upgrade request may only offer December 1. These are ongoing-plan changes, separate from first activation or reactivation of an eligible older Vacation Plan.
Targeted check October 17, 2026: the linked plan-change and suspension instructions were revised October 15 and 16 respectively. Other price-check dates above remain unchanged. If you do not need to keep a Japanese number, compare data-only travel options instead.
Mobal coverage: what the claim means
Mobal’s current Voice+Data pages identify Docomo as the underlying network and state coverage above 99% of Japan’s population. For most visitors, that is more useful than a plan relying only on overseas roaming.
Still, use coverage information carefully:
- population coverage measures where people live, not every square kilometer;
- rural Hokkaido, mountain areas, tunnels, and remote islands need route-specific checks;
- indoor construction can weaken any carrier’s signal;
- a phone missing important Japanese bands may perform worse than the network map suggests;
- a busy station or event can be slow even when signal bars are strong.
For critical navigation, download offline maps and save accommodation details before travel.
Is Mobal 5G?
Yes, Mobal currently offers 5G on its Voice+Data range and selected compatible products. The phone must support the plan, the relevant Japanese frequencies, and 5G service in the location.
Mobal’s high-speed allowance is still finite. On current monthly Voice+Data products, speeds reduce after the allowance is consumed, even though data remains available. Buyers should therefore compare the monthly allowance—not only the word “5G.”
Who should choose Mobal?
Mobal is a strong starting choice for:
- a student, worker, or resident who needs a real Japanese number;
- someone who wants English-language setup and billing support;
- a user who wants Voice+Data without a long minimum contract;
- a traveler who needs incoming Japanese calls or SMS;
- an unlocked-phone owner who has confirmed compatibility.
Who should compare alternatives?
Compare other providers before choosing Mobal if:
- you only need cheap data for a short holiday;
- you need an eSIM delivered instantly but also require a Japanese number;
- your phone is locked or lacks the required bands or VoLTE support;
- you expect unlimited high-speed data with no allowance;
- you need guaranteed acceptance by a specific bank or verification service;
- you want one shared connection for several family devices.
For the last case, a Pocket WiFi may be simpler. See our eSIM vs Pocket WiFi guide.
Mobal vs Sakura Mobile
Mobal is usually the stronger first comparison when a Japanese phone number and a low entry monthly price matter most. Sakura Mobile is often the easier starting point for a short tourist comparing data-only eSIM, physical SIM, and Pocket WiFi formats.
The correct choice depends on the exact trip length, data requirement, device, delivery method, and upfront charges. Use our complete Mobal vs Sakura Mobile comparison before deciding.

Checklist before buying Mobal
- Decide whether you need data only or a real Japanese number.
- Confirm that your exact phone model is unlocked.
- Check eSIM support, Band 1, VoLTE, and the provider’s incompatible-device notes.
- Confirm whether the selected product supports 5G and tethering.
- Add the upfront product price to the recurring monthly fee.
- Include expected outgoing call and SMS charges.
- Understand the identity, delivery, pickup, and activation timeline.
- Check how and when to cancel an ongoing service.
- Save setup instructions and a backup connection for arrival.
Bottom line
Mobal is good when its distinctive strengths solve a real problem: a Japanese number, English support, flexible Voice+Data, and Docomo network access. Those advantages are most relevant to longer stays and number-first buyers.
For a short sightseeing trip, do not pay for voice complexity unless you need it. Compare data-only eSIM prices and allowances first. For any Mobal product, verify the device, total cost, delivery method, data allowance, and cancellation process before checkout.
