Choose an eSIM for each independent traveler or group when people may split up in Japan. Choose one Pocket WiFi when everyone will stay together and one shared connection is more convenient than setting up several phones. If one phone cannot use eSIM, either combine a physical SIM with an eSIM or keep the group on one router.
For the family examples below, the lowest published total is not always the best choice. A cheaper router can strand half the family without maps if the group separates, while four independent eSIMs may cost more than two hotspot-capable eSIMs when the family only splits into two groups.
Price and testing note: The quoted plan prices were rechecked on October 15, 2026, using official provider pages. Sakura Mobile examples use November 1, 2026 as the sample start date, ending November 7, 10, or 14. Prices are in JPY and include tax. This is a source-based comparison, not a hands-on network, speed, or battery test or a completed checkout quote. Confirm availability and the final total for your own dates.

Quick decision
| Your family situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone stays together | One Pocket WiFi | One router can serve several phones and tablets |
| Two groups may separate | One connection per group | Each group keeps maps and messages |
| Four people may all separate | One eSIM or SIM per person | No one depends on the person carrying a router |
| One phone has no eSIM | Physical SIM + eSIM, or one Pocket WiFi | The hardware limitation decides the available options |
| Arrival day is tightly scheduled | Data-only eSIM | No pickup or return step, if every required phone is compatible |

How to read the prices: The tables show plan subtotals, not guaranteed all-in booking totals. Sakura’s displayed duration discounts are included, but its separate group offer is not. The two-router NINJA example uses the published two-device tariff. Delivery charges and optional protection or accessories are separate; NINJA examples assume free airport-counter pickup and return.
Jump to the example closest to your trip:
- Family of four, 10 days, mostly together
- Four phones, 14 days, two groups
- Two phones, 7 days, one phone without eSIM
If you first need to choose among eSIM, physical SIM, and a router, read our Japan internet decision guide.
Case 1: family of four, 10 days, mostly together
Assumption: two adults carry compatible phones, two children use WiFi-only tablets, and the family expects about 20 GB in total: roughly 8 GB on each adult phone plus 2 GB on each tablet. They normally stay together.
| Configuration | Published allowance covering the trip | Required quantity | Tax-inclusive plan subtotal | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobal 16-day 10 GB tourist eSIM | 10 GB per line; 20 GB total | 2 | ¥9,240 | Each adult keeps a connection; tablet sharing uses phone hotspots |
| Sakura Mobile 10-day 3 GB/day eSIM | Up to 3 GB/day per line | 2 | ¥11,220 before any group offer | More daily data than assumed; each adult stays independent |
| Sakura Mobile 10-day Unlimited Pocket WiFi | Unlimited plan; one shared router | 1 | ¥9,878 | Up to 15 devices; pickup/return and router charging required |
| NINJA WiFi 3 GB/day router | 3 GB/day shared; 30 GB across 10 days | 1 | ¥7,700 | Lowest of these base totals, but the whole family shares one daily allowance |
Recommendation: start with the NINJA WiFi 3 GB/day plan if this family will remain together and 3 GB on any single day is enough. Start with two Mobal eSIMs if the adults may separate or want a backup connection on each phone. Sakura’s router costs ¥2,178 more than the NINJA example here, but its published unlimited plan and up-to-15-device support may justify that difference for heavier shared use. Read the current Sakura Pocket WiFi specifications before comparing checkout totals.
These are not identical allowances. The NINJA plan slows after its 3 GB daily limit, while the two Mobal lines provide 20 GB of high-speed data across the plan period. The Sakura eSIM example provides up to 3 GB per line each day and reduces speed after the daily threshold. Do not rank these only by price if your family streams video or uses laptops heavily.
Check NINJA WiFi’s current non-affiliate rates before assuming the daily plan is still available.
Compare the 16-day 10 GB plan for each adult. Confirm phone compatibility and hotspot use first.
Check current Mobal tourist eSIMsFor this case, compare one Travel Pocket WiFi for the family, not one per person. Enter pickup and return dates, then check the final rental total and any optional charges. If the adults may split up, compare two independent connections instead.
Check Sakura Travel Pocket WiFi for your datesCase 2: four phones, 14 days, two groups
Assumption: two adults and two teenagers carry four phones. The family sometimes splits into two pairs. Expected use is 7 GB per person, 28 GB total. The important requirement is two independent connections, not necessarily four.
| Configuration | Published allowance covering the trip | Required quantity | Tax-inclusive plan subtotal | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobal 16-day 10 GB tourist eSIM | 10 GB per person; 40 GB total | 4 | ¥18,480 | Everyone can separate; four phones must support eSIM |
| Mobal 16-day 50 GB tourist eSIM + hotspot | 50 GB per group; 100 GB total | 2 | ¥10,340 | Lowest Mobal total; each pair must stay near its hotspot phone |
| NINJA WiFi 1 GB/day two-device plan | 1 GB/day per group; 28 GB total across two routers | 2 | ¥11,088 (¥792/day for the pair × 14) | Published two-device rate; strict daily limit and two returns |
| Sakura Mobile 14-day Unlimited Pocket WiFi | Unlimited plan per group | 2 | ¥23,232 before any group offer | High shared allowance; two routers, charging, pickup, and return required |
Recommendation: use two Mobal 50 GB eSIMs—one on an adult phone in each pair—when the two pairs stay together and both phones support reliable hotspot use. The published base total is ¥8,140 lower than four separate Mobal 10 GB eSIMs and provides substantially more total data. Choose four 10 GB eSIMs only when all four people may separate or hotspot battery drain is unacceptable.
The two NINJA routers are a rational non-affiliate alternative when eSIM compatibility is poor, but each pair shares only 1 GB per day before reduced speed. The official rates page lists ¥792/day under 2 devices Plan for this option; do not multiply the ¥440 single-device rate by two and call that the best two-device price. Sakura’s group-offer FAQ requires two or more products of the same type and duration. Its two-router subtotal here is before that offer; confirm the discounted total rather than assuming the table is the lowest checkout price.
Case 3: two phones, 7 days, one phone without eSIM
Assumption: two adults and one child stay together most of the time. There are two unlocked phones, but only one supports eSIM. Expected shared use is up to 3 GB per day.
| Configuration | Published allowance covering the trip | Required quantity | Tax-inclusive plan subtotal | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sakura 7-day physical SIM + 7-day eSIM, both 3 GB/day | Up to 3 GB/day on each phone | 1 + 1 | ¥9,570 | Both adults stay connected; physical SIM requires pickup/delivery and compatibility |
| Sakura Mobile 7-day Unlimited Pocket WiFi | Unlimited plan; one shared router | 1 | ¥8,558 | ¥1,012 less than the SIM pair; everyone depends on one router |
| NINJA WiFi 3 GB/day router | 3 GB/day shared; 21 GB across 7 days | 1 | ¥5,390 | Lowest of these totals if the family stays together and the daily cap is enough |
Recommendation: choose the NINJA 3 GB/day router for the stated data use when the family will stay together. Choose the physical SIM plus eSIM combination when the adults need independent maps and messaging. The Sakura router sits between them: it costs less than two independent lines and publishes a higher allowance, but it still creates one point of failure.
Before choosing the physical SIM, confirm that the phone is unlocked, accepts the correct SIM size, supports the plan’s network bands, and can be collected or delivered before it is needed. Before choosing either router, confirm pickup hours, return method, optional protection, and loss or late-return charges.
Side-by-side format comparison
| Decision factor | eSIM | Physical SIM | Pocket WiFi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical pickup | Usually none | Pickup or delivery may apply | Pickup or delivery usually applies |
| Return required | No physical item to return | No for the Sakura Travel SIM example here; monthly contracts can differ | Yes for rentals |
| Connection follows | One phone | One phone | The router |
| Sharing | Phone hotspot, subject to plan and device | Phone hotspot, subject to plan and device | Designed for several devices |
| Battery dependency | Phone battery | Phone battery | Router battery plus each device |
| Best fit | Independent compatible phones | Unlocked phone without eSIM | Group staying together |
| Main failure point | Lock, compatibility, installation | SIM size, compatibility, pickup | Pickup, charging, loss, return |
| Japanese phone number | Not on the data-only examples here | Not on the data-only example here | No; it provides WiFi data |
Return scope: Sakura’s Travel SIM instructions say the physical SIM does not need returning. Its Monthly SIM instructions require the card to be returned with postage paid by the customer. Do not apply the Travel rule to a Monthly contract.
Targeted check: The Sakura Travel-versus-Monthly SIM return distinction was checked on October 15, 2026. The separate price recheck below covers the quoted plans, not every contract condition.
What the official plan terms mean
Mobal tourist eSIM
The price examples use Mobal’s data-only tourist eSIMs. Its official page lists the 16-day 10 GB plan at ¥4,620 and the 16-day 50 GB plan at ¥5,170, including tax. After the high-speed allowance is used, the current product page says the line remains connected at reduced speeds up to 200 kbps. Hotspot use is supported, but Mobal does not guarantee it on every device and operating system.
Sakura Mobile travel products
For sample trips starting November 1, 2026, the official simulators showed these tax-inclusive unit prices when checked on October 15:
- 10-day 3 GB/day eSIM: ¥5,610 including tax;
- 14-day 3 GB/day eSIM: ¥6,930 including tax;
- 7-day 3 GB/day eSIM: ¥4,620 including tax;
- 7-day 3 GB/day physical SIM: ¥4,950 including tax;
- 7-day / 10-day / 14-day Unlimited Pocket WiFi: ¥8,558 / ¥9,878 / ¥11,616 including tax.
Sakura’s 3 GB/day eSIM page says speed falls to 200 kbps after the daily threshold; its 3 GB/day physical SIM page showed 1 Mbps after the threshold for the selected example. Its current Pocket WiFi page says one device can connect up to 15 devices and lists a 20-hour battery. Those are provider specifications, not measurements made by this site.
Unlimited on the phone does not mean unlimited hotspot sharing. Sakura publishes a separate hotspot limit for each Unlimited eSIM duration: for example, 9GB for its 10-day plan. Check the current limit for your selected plan; do not treat that figure as a daily allowance. The 3GB/day examples above are a different product, so do not apply the Unlimited hotspot table to them.
Targeted check: Sakura’s hotspot and pickup/return conditions were additionally checked on October 7, 2026. Those condition checks are separate from the October 15 price recheck.
NINJA WiFi non-affiliate comparison
NINJA WiFi’s official rates page lists tax-inclusive single-device prices of ¥440/day for 1 GB/day and ¥770/day for 3 GB/day, and a ¥792/day two-device rate for the 1 GB/day option. It says speed falls to 128 kbps after the daily allowance. The listed advance-booking rates require notice at least one day ahead. Airport-counter pickup and return are free; the page lists delivery pickup and return at ¥550 each for up to four units. Optional insurance and accessories are extra.
Calculate the whole-trip cost
For an eSIM or physical SIM, multiply the full-duration plan by the number of people or groups that need an independent connection. Do not use an 8-day plan to price a 10-day trip.
For a router, include the entire rental period, tax, any mandatory delivery or return charge, and the number of routers needed to preserve connectivity when the family splits. Keep optional insurance and accessories in a separate line.
eSIM/SIM total = full-trip plan price × required independent lines + mandatory fees
Pocket WiFi total = full rental price × required routers + mandatory delivery/return fees

Purchase checklist
Before paying, verify all of the following on the current product and checkout pages:
- Exact dates: activation day, expiry time, pickup date, and return date.
- Every phone model: unlocked status, eSIM support, network bands, and SIM size.
- Independent groups: how many people may separate and who carries each connection.
- High-speed allowance: daily or plan-wide limit, reduced speed, and hotspot allowance.
- Full total: tax, mandatory delivery, return, pickup, and required accessories.
- Failure plan: offline maps, saved booking details, charging cable, and another way to contact the group.
- Calls and SMS: the plans compared above are data-only. First check which number must receive the SMS: a code for your existing home number differs from a service requiring a Japanese number. Confirm home-carrier roaming terms; compare Japanese voice service if you need ordinary Japanese calls or a Japanese number.
Check the pickup and return route separately
Arriving late at Haneda? Check the pickup windows and your airport-to-hotel connection before relying on airport collection or hotel delivery.
| Before booking a router | Your note |
|---|---|
| Arrival airport, terminal, counter and expected pickup time | ______ |
| Counter hours and ordering deadline, with timezone | ______ |
| Passport-name match and booking confirmation saved offline | ______ |
| Backup if the flight is delayed or pickup is missed | ______ |
| Departure terminal, return point and deadline | ______ |
| Provided envelope, router and all rental accessories | ______ |
| Maps and boarding information accessible after returning it | ______ |
For Sakura Travel Pocket WiFi, verify the exact terminal and counter hours using its pickup and return map before choosing airport pickup. Its airport FAQ lists a 4 p.m. Japan-time ordering deadline on the preceding day; check availability and any express conditions for your selected option. Bring your passport and the booking code or QR confirmation, with the recipient’s name matching the passport.
Return the router and all rental accessories in the provided prepaid envelope, following the deadline in your order. Sakura’s product page says to post it by midnight on the return date. At airports, complete the return before security. Its return FAQ says Kansai and Fukuoka counters accept returns; other airport counters are pickup-only, so use the indicated Japan Post postbox. Do not leave it with hotel or airport staff to post later.
If you miss pickup, contact Sakura promptly to arrange the next step; forwarding can involve a shipping fee and is not automatic. Save the airport map, return instructions, and essential travel information offline. These rules are specific to Sakura, not every WiFi provider.
Sources and calculation limits
Quoted prices were rechecked on October 15, 2026 on the official Mobal tourist eSIM, Sakura Travel eSIM, Sakura Travel SIM, Sakura Pocket WiFi, and NINJA WiFi rates pages. Condition-specific check dates are noted separately above.
The examples compare a defined set of published plans; they are not a claim that a provider is the cheapest across the whole market. Network speed, coverage at a specific address, battery life in real use, and support quality were not tested. No product was purchased for this comparison.
Bottom line
The family structure should decide the format before the provider does:
- One group: compare one Pocket WiFi with the number of phone lines you would otherwise buy.
- Two groups: provide one connection per group; one router for the whole family is not equivalent.
- Everyone independent: use one compatible eSIM or SIM per person.
- One incompatible phone: compare a physical SIM + eSIM pair with one shared router.
Then check the live total and terms. A low headline price is useful only when the plan covers every travel day, every required group, and the data you actually expect to use.
